>> this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, december 7, 2012. good morning. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. a strong earthquake hit northeastern japan this morning, the magnitude 7.3 quake struck in the early evening in the same area that suffered a powerful quake and tsunami last year. a tsunami warning has been issued. residents have been told to move to higher ground. the fukushima nuclear plant has not been damaged. the quake was felt as far south as tokyo. lucy craft is in tokyo. what can you tell us? >> reporter: no reports of damage or injury. it's still way too early. we have a tsunami warning. the tide is about three feet or two meters or one meter, i should say. very interesting, this time the warnings came very "fast and

furious." the announcer was yelling at people to get to higher ground. >> we were watching in our newsroom as the alerts came in. what did you feel, what did you experience there? was it anything noticeable? >> i was talking to someone on the phone and she said she should get off the phone, this is a big one. my windows were rattling. much more powerful earthquake than we're used to. >> early indications, are you seeing people taking this seriously? what has the response been from people? >> you know, tokyo, again we're pretty far away from the area where the tsunami and the major magnitude was felt this time around but i don't think anyone is fooling around this time. elm are very serious about getting to higher ground. that was the message of disaster in 2011. i don't think anybody is hesitating this time. >> lucy craft joining us from

tokyo. we'll have more on this story coming up a little later on cbs "this morning." more protests are expected in the streets of egypt today during a phone conversation, president obama told president mohamed morsi that the violence there is unacceptable. at least six people have been killed as morsi supporters and opponents fought outside of the presidential palace. opponents marched on the palace last night calling on morsi to step down. holly williams is in cairo. >> reporter: some people hope that after days of protest and bloodshed president morsi would make a major concession when he addressed the nation but he didn't do that. his opponents want to immediately give up all of the sweeping new powers that he gave himself two weeks ago and postpone a referendum on egypt as new constitution which is due to take place in over a week. critics say the constitution

doesn't protect the rights of all egyptians. president morsi didn't do either of those thing. instead he offered to give up one power, a vaguely right to take any necessary measure to protect the country. he would give up all of his new powers once the referendum has taken place. >> you mentioned president morsi addressing the egyptian people. what has the response been on the street? >> reporter: well there were thousands of anti-morsi protesters outside of the mounta presidential palace. many started chanting a logan we heard two years ago during the egyptian revolution, the people want the downfall of the regime. also yesterday we had that phone call from president obama to president morsi that he expressed his deep concern over the violence and deaths that have taken place and also urged president morsi to have a dialogue with the opposition without any pre-conditions. ? holly williams in caro for us. thank you so much. to the crisis now in syria.

there are growing fears this morning that as opposition forces advance, a desperate assad regime may consider using chemical weapons. as events on the ground pick up speed so do diplomatic efforts. susan mcginnis has details on a high level meeting between the u.s. and russia. susan, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. intelligence reports are suggesting as this regime gets closer to falling, syrian president, bashir al assad could release sirrin gas to sub due the rebellion. this would be a new phase of the war. it has the u.s. uniting with russia to stop it and some here on capitol hill calling for u.s. military intervention. rockets streak across the syrian sky as the battles across rebel forces and troops move to outskirts of the capital of damascus. jeffrey white says it's only a matter time before the bloody civil war is over.

>> you can feel it. you can sense it. looks like the regime is being defeet. >> reporter: intelligence officials say chemical weapons believed to be stored at this syrian base have been primed and ready for use. >> we remain very concerned. very concerned that as the opposition advances in particular on damascus, that the regime might very well consider the use of chemical weapons. >> reporter: so far the u.s. has been very reluctant to use military force to help the overthrow of syrian president bashar al assad. reports he is considering using chemical weapons have some on capitol hill now calling for the president to get tough with the dictator. >> we urge the president of the united states to make whatever military preparations are necessary to show assad that the united states is fully willing and able to impose the consequences that he's spoken of in the event these weapons are

used. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton met with her russian counter part thursday to secure russia's support. >> the international community, specifically the russians are united on this issue. >> reporter: all sides hope the first side of diplomatic issue to end the syrian war. the syrian government has promised not to use any chemical weapons against the people there but the fear is that as assad starts to topple, as the fighting increases in the suburbs of damascus he may feel cornered and no telling what he might do. >> susan mcginnis in washington on a friday morning. thank you so much. in this country president obama says cutting a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff could to be done in a week but the president said that won't happen unless republicans drop their opposition to the wealthy. president obama visited a virginia family to move his cause. he maintained his hard line on

included holiday musical performances. cbs moneywatch. netflix in trouble for a facebook post. ashley morrison has more. >> reporter: good morning. we'll find out today just how much superstorm sandy slowed job growth when the labor department releases the november employment report. on thursday the government reported weekly applications for jobless benefits fell sharply. the decline suggests the return to modest job growth that plunged during sandy's aftermath. some economists believe fewer than 100,000 jobs were added in november but others say if not for sandy job gains would have been at their highest since february. asian markets were lower. nikkei lost a fraction and hang seng lost a fraction. michigan a long time bed rom of union employment could soon become the nation's 24th right to work state. protesters rallied at the state house and senate on thursday. both chambers passed separate

bills banning mandatory union dues from non-union members. tech stocks gave wall street a boost. apple one of the tech stocks that led the stock market said it will move some of its mass computer production from china to the u.s. it accounts for less than 20% of apple's business. the rest is from ipod and ipad production. one factor may be that tiny labor costs are rising much faster than u.s. wages. and the securities and exchange commission is investigating netflix and the company's ceo. he's dismissing the claim that his facebook post in july may have posted the online video stock price. at the time he mentioned how much netflix viewing had increased. the stock price rose 19% over a

>> howard has started his weekend all right. the lovely olga is in for howard. we have some cloud cover. temperatures on the cool side. i'm tracking rain on the doppler radar. that will lead to a few sprinkles today. we're definitely calling it a yellow alert day. not bad right now for the immediate metro area. off to the west there's moisture moving n. winds are southwest -- moving in. winds are from the southwest pulling in all the moisture and it will definitely lead to sprinkles later on today. i don't think it will be too much of a nuisance for you. we're keeping the cloud cover throughed midday hour. we move out of the 40s. i think high temperatures should hover right around 52, 53 degrees. then we'll back down later on in the day as the sun sets. current temperature, be prepared for cool conditions as you step out this morning. only 39 in manassas. 35 out towards leesburg. a little warmer to the south.

395 and the 14th street bridge. i'll be back with more traffic at 4:39. back to you guys. we are counting down and we are now 24 days away from falling off that fiscal cliff. neither the republicans nor the democrats are backing down from their demands. neither side seems willing to take the first step toward real negotiations. >> even on tv they're saying publicly. the president says they are prepared to go over the cliff if the republicans don't agree to end the tax cuts for the healthiest americans. the republicans believe their counteroffer of closing loopholes and limiting deductions is the way to go. one family from falls church is one of many that will be hit very hard for the cuts are not extended. >> a couple thousands dollars means a couple months rent for this family. for them to be burdened

unnecessarily because democrats and republicans aren't coming together to solve this problem gives you a sense of the costs involved in very personal terms. >> at a senate hearing yesterday, there was a economist that backed the republicans' plan. he cannot imagine anyone looking at the president's proposal and arguing it wouldn't send the country into recession. fairfax county could be especially vulnerable if we go off the cliff. >> because they rely heavily on government contracts. if spending is cut, a lot of people could be out of a job. >> reporter: northern virginia is the economic engine of the state. what is it that's transformed and built the economy? federal contracts. from 1980 through 2009, federal contracting in northern virginia increased from $1.7 billion to $38.5 billion, but there's worry the bottom could fall out. >> government contractors would stop doing business in fairfax county because there
